Documents for self-employed borrowers

Documents for self-employed borrowers
If you're self-employed, whether as a sole trader, in a partnership, or through a company or trust structure, lenders may ask for additional documentation beyond what's required for PAYG employees. Here's a general overview of what you may need.
Standard requirements
- Last two years of personal and business tax returns
- Corresponding Notices of Assessment from the ATO
- Business financial statements (profit and loss, balance sheet)
- BAS lodgements (typically the last four quarters)
- ABN registration confirmation
Additional documents that may be requested
- Accountant's letter or declaration confirming income
- Business bank statements (last six months)
- ATO portal income summary
- Loan statements for existing business finance
What if you don't have two years of returns?
Some lenders may accept one year of tax returns, or alternative documentation such as BAS statements or bank statements, depending on the loan product and your circumstances. These products may have different conditions, so it's important to understand the trade-offs.
